Art Taylor will talk on scene building, from 1-3pm, virtually on Zoom. Zoom links are sent to subscribers.
“Show, Don’t Tell” is a common mantra in creative writing workshops—but perhaps an oversimplification of what should be a more nuanced approach to crafting successful fiction. In this session, we’ll discuss the five potential elements of scene-building (including “telling”!), discuss direct and indirect presentation of character, and consider how the scene serves as a building block of the larger structure of a story.
Art Taylor is an associate professor of English and creative writing at George Mason University. His most recent book is The Boy Detective & The Summer of ’74 and Other Tales of Suspense. His fiction has won the Edgar, Agatha, Anthony, Derringer, and Macavity Awards. Find out more at www.arttaylorwriter.com.
Art how do we sign up for your talk today
Solveig-sorry I missed this. The zoom link is sent in the newsletter, then again in the reminder (which I failed to get out this month). Apologies. The link to the slides was sent in the September follow-up email on 9/26.
Zoom links to meetings are sent in the monthly newsletter, then usually again the day before. This month things slipped, as the president was in the middle of moving during this meeting.
I am so sorry I missed this because I forgot to check my calendar and went to get a COVID shot instead. Is the presentation recorded somewhere that members of Write by the Rails guests can access it?
Nancy, a link to the slides was sent in the newsletter on 9/26. If you’re not on the mailing list, send me a message directly and I’ll provide the link.
Unfortunately they were unable to record the meeting. The slides were sent in the newsletter on 9/26. If you don’t have access to the newsletter you can request the slides directly through the contact on this site.
