Barnes & Noble Guidelines
Barnes and Noble has a strictly sign-and-sell agreement with NVWC. Please make sure you read and understand the expectations before your signing.
- B&N will supply a six-foot table, chair, and covering. (it’s best to bring your own covering, just in case). Some locations will give you a four-fiit table due to space restraints and fire marshal restrictions.
- You will be asked to sign an agreement upon your arrival.
- B&N takes 40 percent. Not negotiable. You will be paid in cash or check at the end of your signing.
- Keep track of your sales to compare notes with manager before you are paid.
- Bring your own books, sign at the table, and customer takes to the cashier.
- Your book must have an ISBN number. No exceptions. An ASIN number will be rejected.
- You may bring multiple titles. If so, please bring a printout of your titles with ISBNs and price and give to the manager upon arrival.
- Please make sure you display a sign that clearly states, “meet the author.”
- Please dress appropriately.
- One of your titles will be featured on the online B&N calendar, prior to the event. They may use your image, bio, and book cover in other advertising at their discretion.
- You MUST be at the signing table alone.
- You are obligated to stay at least the allotted 3 hours. Usually the managers will tell you that you can stay longer.
- Please leave your laptop at home. Do not have phone calls/drama/music at signing table. It’s better to cancel your signing than not be 100 percent present/available to customers. (This is a big pet peeve of B&N)
- Do not eat at the table. A drink is okay.
- All questions go through Event Chair Lois Wren. Do not contact the store directly or go in beforehand to chat about your signing or negotiate.
- Friends/family hanging around your table will discourage foot traffic. B&N frowns upon it, especially if blocking the aisles or disrupting displays.
- Do ask first if you have a large display. Some stores may have strict requirements from corporate/fire marshal.
- individually wrapped candies at the signing table are acceptable. Homemade goodies are unacceptable. (Health Violation)
- Do not visit the store or call beforehand to discuss your signing.
- Please remember that you are representing NVWC. We are able to secure the signings (95 signings in 2025) because these guidelines are in place.
- Please give feedback to Lois Wren after each signing. If you have questions, please clarify with Lois Wren before the signing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t my wife/husband/friend sit with me?
It’s not professional, and we have had negative feedback from B&N.
I want to do a reading/storytime. Why can’t I do it during my signing?
The NVWC agreement is strictly for signing/sales. These signings often lead to other opportunities in the store.
What if one of my books is stolen?
Sadly, it happens. It’s important to keep track of sales. No guarantees but to date the store has always paid the author.
Why do I have to give feedback?
It may help us in future planning.
Does B&N keep a file on each author?
We believe they do.
Will B&N advertise me/my book?
Sometimes. It depends on the store and staff. You will definitely be on the online calendar, and you are encouraged to tag the store.
Do B&N give feedback about author signings?
Yes. Lois Wren will pass on positive/negative feedback to the author.
Why do some authors get more signings than others?
There are many variables. For example, sometimes the stores request an author to come back. Sometimes they request an author doesn’t return.
